What you should know about ozone ratings

Don't be fooled by ozone machines claiming 3500 mgph ozone outputs for very low prices, as most of them really only produce 700 mgph when used with normal air.

Most of these units are imported from China. The Chinese typically rate their machines using pure oxygen as a source gas, which makes their ratings 5 times higher than they would be in actual use. The reputable Chinese manufacturers give both ratings, i.e. 3500 for oxygen, 700 for air. As more and more competitors start importing machines made in China, or start assembling machines in their garage trying to make a quick buck on the Internet, they intentionally offer these misleading ozone output ratings. They also fail to mention that the Chinese rate the life expectancy of the ozone cells at 500 hours (about 3 weeks of continuous use).

It would take 6 of these machines to equal the output of our FM-14 which is only $429.00 right now. So you do the math. Multiply their price by 6 and see who really has the best buy.

Only a powerful machine, like our FM-14 with 4000 mgph will do the job, if you have a tough odor, or mold/mildew issue in a normal size house, and our machines can be used continuously for months and months.

A competitor is even offering an ozone generator mounted on a piece of wood, with no cover, for sale. The ozone plate, which is energized with 4000 volts of electricity, is right out in the open just waiting for someone to touch it and get zapped. A high voltage jolt of even a few Milli-amps can be enough to cause heart failure in some humans.

That same supplier claims higher ozone output and area of coverage, because they use an extra large fan. In reality, the fan has very little to do with ozone output, as the ozone output is a function of the size of the transformer and the number and size of the ozone plates. The amount of ozone produced by an ozone generator is practically the same, whether a fan is used on not.

Still others give an output achievable under “optimal conditions”, or “up to...”. Their “optimal conditions” can only be achieved using pure oxygen.

This can be misleading since supplying pure oxygen is very expensive, requiring renting an oxygen tank from a medical or industrial supply house and paying for refills to be delivered. Oxygen machines and concentrators are also available to supply the needed oxygen, but they fail to tell you that they are several thousand dollars each. Some of these over-rated machines are not even designed to accept a pure oxygen gas feed.

Our ratings are based on normal air as a source gas at 60% humidity. If we were to rate our machines in the misleading manner that others do, the output would be 5 times higher than the ones we specify.

How can this be? The air we breathe contains roughly 78% nitrogen, 20.95% oxygen, 0.93% argon, 0.038% carbon dioxide, trace amounts of other gases, and a variable amount of water vapor.

For instance, our FM-14 has a very conservative ozone output rating of 4000 mgph in normal air (and air only has 20% oxygen). In pure 100% oxygen (5 x 20%)it would be rated at 20,000 mgph (5 x 4000). Our 8000 mgph rating for our PRO–8 would be 40,000 mgph and so on.

You get what you pay for...

A good quality ozone machine is expensive to manufacture. They need to be made out of Stainless steel or powder coated aluminum, not cheap plastic, if they are going to hold up to many years of use. They need to be designed to be easily maintained by the user, and have ozone plates that are easy to keep clean to insure peak performance.

One of our competitors recommends that the ozone plates in their machine get replaced every year (at $90.00 per set) and that the machine have a tune–up every other year ($150 each time) at the factory. Over a ten–year lifespan of their machine, the maintenance cost alone would be over $1300.00, plus the hassle of losing its use, packing it up and paying for shipping. Oh yeah, what happens if it gets damaged or lost in shipping? Who pays for that?

Our machines have ozone plates that are easily changed by you sliding them out and cleaning them by hand or in a dishwasher and sliding them back in. There is no need to pack up the machine every year and return it to us. Our replacement plates are $10.00 each and they last for many years depending on how much you use the machine.

Some of our competitors offer a 7 day money back guarantee. If you return it in 30 days, they will accept it back, but charge you a $50.00 restocking fee. We have a full 30 day money back guarantee, and our warrantee is not prorated over time. If you return one of machines within 2 years for repairs, and if we have improved our machines during the time you have owned it, we not only repair it, but we incorporate these improvements if possible, for free. Our ratings are conservative and are based on actual use in the field. Our machines have been developed and continually improved — using over 12 years of feedback from thousands of our customers. If you want a real “bare bones” mold or odor killer with plenty of ozone output for a normal size house, buy our FM-14 ozone generator. We rate the FM–14 at 4000 mgph (but others would rate it at 20,000 mgph).

If you want machines with variable output, built in timers, hour meters, and programmable settings, we have them also. Over the years customers who regularly use our machines have identified these needs and requested that we add these features. Just click on product and prices. From there you can see all of our ozone machines at a glance. We also offer remote controls, timers, ac adapters, and replacement plates, etc. Just click on our list of accessories.

CA. Residents note: Ozone generators are no longer allowed to be shipped to California residences, pursuant to AB 2276 (Air Cleaner Regulation) . If you would like to purchase one of our ozone generators in California for an industrial application like mold and mildew remediation or odor removal in unoccupied spaces, contact us for one of our industrial supply outlets near you.

Please Remember: All Ozone Generators, regardless of manufacturer, are an electronic appliance containing electrical parts and connections. Your generator will become damaged, your warrantee voided, and the ozone output lessened if immersed in water or operated when humidity (moisture in the air) is above 60%. Lowering the humidity can often be accomplished by simply running a dehumidifier or air-conditioner in the room to be treated.
